Duke,a young fellow told me at my local auto store that CL-4 deisel oils would no longer be advailable with in the next year. Is there any truth to this? If so, I need to stock up! If true, what would you recommend as a replacement? Thanks in advance! Jon

Re: Duke.....rumors?
CI-4 will be replaced by CJ-4 in about a year and there is some controversy. Go to page 3 and scroll down to the thread stated by Scott Smith, 5 April 10:15 PM, and to the the link with the article.
CJ-4 may represent somewhat of a "downgrade" but it will still be better for vintage engines than SM rated oils.

Re: Duke.....rumors?
had a buddy, back in about 1961, whose father became fearful that sugar would no longer be readily available due to Castro and cuba. the old goat went out and bought sugar by the 25# sacks and i mean a bunch of sacks, stored it in his attic till the joists finally gave way. pinned my buddys mom to her bed.she damn near bought the farm. if you guys stock up on diesel oil, keep it on the garage floor. mike- Top

my opinion is it is only a problem
for new camshaft break in and if you use molly kote and GM engine oil suppliment there should be no problem. i have been using mobil 1 in my 88 silverado with a hyd.flat tappet cam since it was new and now a 130,000+ miles later the cam is still fine. JMHO- Top

There again- our engines
will probably outlast us even if we used bargain basement 10W-30, so what will you gain by using the diesel oils?- Top

Re: Duke.....rumors?
Costco sells 15W-40 Chevron Delo by the case - six gallon jugs, and I'll probably buy a case this year, which will take me through about the next two annual oil changes on my cars with what I have on hand, but I don't see any point in buying a "lifetime supply". CJ-4 may end up not being quite as "good" as CI-4, but I don't think it's going to cause our engines to wear out signficantly sooner.
CJ-4 will still have a better additive package than SM oils.

Re: Duke.....rumors?
Jon,
Starting in 2007, large diesel trucks will have catalitic converters, hence the reformulated oil. It is not a total reformulation like present automotive oils. Probably no reason to stock up on the present oil.

Re: Duke.....rumors? Nope
They also will run DPF's which are diesel particulate filters which will also burn off particulates. Rumors are that the heat generated to burn off these particulates will be in excess of or around 1200 degrees coming out the stacks. Gonna be a problem for those who run horizontal exhaust sytems! All the OEM's are scurrying designing new exhaust systems also. For those interested in this kind of stuff try to find the rag called Diesel Progress. LOTS of good stuff!- Top
