How to gravity bleed C-3 brakes

It's been a long time, and I can't remember if when gravity bleeding brakes, does one leave the brake pedal in the up (unapplied) position or should it be held down (applied) with a weight or some sort or a telescoping rod wedged against the floor or seat to hold it in the applied position? Then when you open the bleeders, it will gravity bleed. Saw an old time mechanic who always worked alone, do it this way but can't remember the pedal position.
    Thank you,

Leave the pedal up. Open the furtherest bleeder(right rear) from the master cylinder. Wait until fluid starts flowing. Close the bleeder. Open the left rear bleeders. Do the same. Got to right front and then to the left front and follow the same procedures.

My Corvette mechanic pressure bleeds Corvette brake lines. He removes the master cylinder cap and clamps on a cap with an air hose nipple. He puts his compressor air hose on it and it equally forces pressure to each of the bleeders. None of that gravity bleed or pedal pump bleed (need two participants) and no more air bubbles being chased through the system.
