Engine Replacement - Looking for ideas

Re: Engine Replacement - Looking for ideas

Hi Craig, I like that last name.

Just a couple of thoughts. Are you going to show the car and have it judged like for NCRS or Bloomington Gold. If so then you need to try to find an engine with the "right" casting numbers. If not, at least get the right generation. Will loose some points but if everything else is correct should be okay.

If you are not going the judging route, then your engine options are open. You could go hot rod, but have the feeling that you at least want something that "looks" correct and that will drive okay (not necessarly a quarter mile burner). Right? Then check out the salvage yards for a vintage engine and have it rebuilt. Your biggest cost will probley be the stuff on top of the engine like the intake/carb/valve covers/etc. Nobody sees the block. Should be able to pick up an engine with low compression and small valve heads for a reasonable price. Have a low cost rebuild of the block, rebuild the heads, then add the original top parts. You will have a nice running car that looks correct.

      Craig:

Another thing to remember is even if you can't find a correct (or refuse to take out a second mortgage to buy a concours) block, make sure it is from the same time period. Small block ventilation changed in 1967 (I think) and they no longer had the draft tube on the back of the block. There has been some discussion on the board however about how to plumb a late model block to work with the early valve covers.I know where there are a couple of 283s. Email if you want me to check.

Craig, you ight try Performance Chevrolet in Arizona they have a large selection of castings and date codes and the one time I did business with them I thought that their prices were fairly reasonable. They will either sell you the bare castings or build you a complete motor. John
