Hello all - I am looking to get a set of Goldlines for a 65 for judging. I don't need to get NOS tires, I was looking to get a DOT reproduction tire. Can someone recommend the best source for a Firestone Super Sports or a Goodyear power cushion that will minimize the number of points lost for judging? Thanks! Ken

Ken-----
Personally, I would go with the Goodyear Power Cushion. But, I've always favored Goodyear tires so I may be a bit prejudiced. As far as "correctness" goes FOR MID-YEARS, I think that the Firestone and Goodyear reproductions are pretty much the same.
You can obtain the Goodyear reproduction from Kelsey-Tire (www.kelseytire.com). You can also order the reproduction through Goodyear stores, assuming that you can find one that's savvy enough to know how to order it. They have to get them from Kelsey and you will pay the same price as if you ordered it from Kelsey. They will also want you to pay the freight from Kelsey, just as if you ordered it direct from Kelsey. So, what's the advantage of getting it from a Goodyear dealer. Well, hopefully, they'll mount the tires for you for free since you purchased it from them. Actually, any Goodyear dealer is supposed to mount Goodyear tires for free even if you bring them in. But, most probably don't know that and they probably aren't going to be too agreeable for a guy just bringing in 4 tires and asking them to mount them for free.
If you purchase them through the dealer, who knows, you might even be able to get them to agree to balance them for free? After all, considering the price of the tires and the fact that you're having to pay for the shipping, they might feel inclined to "cut you a little slack".
If you go for the Firestone tires, you can get them from Dr. Rebuild or Coker Tire. They are exactly the same tire. I think that the Doc might give you a better deal, though. In fact, I think that the Firestone reproduction from the Doc is going to be your best buy from a price standpoint and will be less expensive than the Goodyear tire.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I noticed that Eckler's now offers a non-DOT reproduction tire (see link below). Any comments?

Dave-----
I hope the tire in the picture is not the reproduction they're talking about. That looks like a radial tire. Certainly, the tread pattern is nothing like the original tire. For the tire pictured, it would not matter if it had the "DOT", or not. No one would even look that far.
Notwithstanding this which is likely an error on the page, why anyone would pay a premium price and go through all this "certification" business in order to have a tire without the "DOT" marking is WAY beyond me. It's a detail of such miniscule consequence that I would be ashamed to say that I subscribe to that level of restoration effort. I mean, it's just absolutely SILLY.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

The ad mentions radial construction, as far as a "reproduction" is concerned, this tire need not applyBill Clupper #618- Top

Good point Joe. I think it is the wrong picture. Below is the same item for the '67 which seems to show a bias ply style tread pattern. It seems like a lot for 3 points (10% of 30 points). I find it interesting that someone is offering it.
Bill, I don't think it is a radial.

Re: Tire recommendation for judging
I have not looked closely at a Firestone Bias reproduction, but in genereal among the things to be considered ae the width of the tread and also the width thru the center section of the tire, both of which differ from the Whitewall constructions, and both of which are properly presented on the Goodyear from Kelsey.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Looks like you're right Dave,I think they used the same picture for radials & bias. Went to see the radials & they are prices like 40 bucks cheaper. The other Firestone bias they offer are cheaper than the radials yet.- Top
