    Exhaust black paint/goop

    Hi,

I wanted to know where I can find the black paint/goop that is supposed to cover the resonators on a 67. Also, how should it be applied? Thanks for the help.

    Chuck -

Picture yourself standing next to the line with an airless spray gun in hand, with the chassis coming by with the frame about 24" from the floor, and you then spray the mufflers from the side; that's how it was done.

      Thanks John,

Is the paint still available, if so what should I be looking for? Thanks.

Resonators? No 1967 Corvette ever used a resonator. Those with undercar exhaust have forward exhaust pipes, rear exhaust pipes, mufflers, and outlet pipes (tips). That's it. If you're talking about the mufflers, I recommedn using high heat, satin black paint on them. Barbecue black works real well, too. Actually, the original paint was not a high heat paint and it's not completely necessary for the mufflers. But, it will look better, longer than other paints.

By the way, there was only ONE 1953-82 Corvette that ever used resonators. That model year was 1974.

I THINK it is semi-flat black. I used Krylon rattle can and got great results on my 72. I compared them to an assembly line photo and they looked just like John described.

VHT (very high temp) makes a black no gloss high heat paint that works well to 1300 degress i believe. I purchased a can from quantas for my muffler blackout and it had a paper label on it. Under the paper label was the "VHT" label. You should be able to get it at better speed shops or parts stores.
