    1981 aspirator tube

    It is a very late 1981 Bowling Green car with 30k miles. There is no aspirator tube coming from the catalytic converter to the air pump. There is also no provision on the catalytic converter for the tube either. I dont think the catalytic conv had been changed. Could someone check their car or comment on this. Thank you.

    GM says that such a tube was installed on all 1981 Corvettes. The tube connects at a fitting (rather than a tube nipple) on the forward, driver's side of the converter.

      Joe - thanks for the response -- this car is driving us crazy. There is no evidence of the bracket/clamp that holds it to the exhaust pipe either. I wonder if it ever came with one and am almost ready to bet that. If that is true I wonder what kind of a plug they wold have used on the air switching valve. I had a response from someone in CA that said their aspirator tube was placed on the car and described as some waranty work for better emissions.

        According to GM, the tube was used for all 1981 Corvettes. However, that does not absolutely mean that, for sure, it was. Everything that I have checked and cross-checked seems to indicate that, though. Some of these emissions things get VERY complicated, however, and there were "evolutionary" changes driven by federal and state emissions laws.

        Anyway, a few things to check that might help get to the bottom of this:

        1) Does the converter have "GM" and/or, hopefully, a stamped number on it? Of course, this information could be stamped on the top surface where it's not visible when installed in the car. If you can discern a number, what is it?

        2) Does the converter have a fitting on the forward, driver side?

        3) Can you discern any sort of GM part number or numbers on the AIR control valve?

        4) Does the AIR control valve have a port for the air feed to the converter? In other words, is there a port which is not being used on your car?

        5) What is the approximate date of manufacture of your car?

        6) What transmission does your car have?

        7) Do you know where the car was originally delivered?
