63-67 vettes for the "budget minded"

I happen to stumble across an old Road & Track from February of 1975 this morning. Some interesting reading. There is an article titled "Corvette Stingray, 63-67", and the subtitle is "fast, reliable sports cars for the budget-minded enthusiast". I can think of many terms to describe C2 vettes, but "budget-minded" does not come to mind! Reading the prices of cars for sale in the classified section just made me sick. I'd like to take a few grand back to '75! Now if I can just get this time machine working.... Anybody got a spare flux capacitor?

In 74 my neighbor had a 67 427-390 Sunpuke yellow coupe. He married a young girl who couldn't drive it and had trouble pushing in the clutch. He traded it in on a 74 Toileta Corolla and got a whopping $1800 for it. I would have given up an internal organ for that car. Wish I would have known before he did it.

          Mike,

--------Bought a 65 fuelie roadster, Nassau/bright blue with teak, tele, KHs, and two tops for $1500 in June of 1971. Beautiful car with one coat of paint over the original. Sold it in October for $1800 to get up a downstroke for a new 72 Grand Prix SJ. Didnt even yank the KHs or teak!!! Sometimes I am simply amazed at the depths of my stupidity. Oh, and the guy pulled the KHs and put on a set of Cragars two weeks after he bought it from me...........Bill S

NCRS # 23259 Yeah, I sold a 58 270HP for $1500.00 in 74 But bought it in 69 for 600.00. Now resides in Newington Ct. achieved "Duntov Car" in 93. Neighbor bought a 67 L-71 roadster in 78 for $4500.00 My brother was the smart one. Bought a 73 911 Porche Carrera RS Lightweight (Real One) for 15K. in 78. My old man and I thought he was crazy. He's still got it. Though he rarely drives it.

I was around in the early '70s, but unfortunately wasn't buying vettes. I was 10 in '74. However I had already developed a love for C1 and C2 vettes. I remember riding in the back of the family car and trying to identify the model year of vettes as they drove by. I've been infected with the corvette bug ever since. They were just used cars at the time, but even back then I thought C1/C2 vettes were the coolest things on the road. My tastes have not changed over the past 30+ years.

bill: your 65 FI reminds me of the 65 green/saddle 65 375 hp roadster i bought in early 1970 for 650 bucks. had 19.5 miles on it, all original, and a spun rod bearing. still got it with just under 20K miles. KO, teak , tele PW ands PB. i added outside exhaust and when i had the engine rebuilt, the speed shop decked the pad which removed all the broach marks but machine assembly and vin data still visible. mike

                  Hey Don,

Great post! Like you, I was just learning to ride my bike and $1,000 may as well have been $1,000,000 (I don't even think I knew the dif). I was just turnbing seven. So, if you ever get that machine working, let me know - I'll spring for one of those budget vetts for you.

It's like dreaming about the lottery.

I got my drivers license in 1970, but accumulating the finances was still years away, unfortunately.
