    C2/fuel pump

    Last week I uncovered the car and backed it out into the driveway to warm up for the first drive since last November. After it had run for 5-10 minutes I saw a palm size puddle of gasoline on the drive and coming from the pump. I couldn't see exactly where it was coming and didn't have time to take it to my local mechanic. But 3 days later I had the chance but it wasn't leaking at all.I ask my mechanic and HE said that it probably was a dry gasket and after the fuel soaked it it sealed itself up and that he wouldn't be afraid to drive it. How wrong is HE or is this not unusual after sitting 4 months ? Help....and thanks.

      Mike and Steve-----

      I TOTALLY agree. If there is ANY QUESTION about the condition of a fuel pump and/or if the pump has more than 50,000 miles or 5 years of service under it's belt, REPLACE IT. There are 3 reasons for this:

      1) Fuel pumps and other fuel system components are a SAFETY ITEM; DO NOT take any chances with SAFETY ITEMS;

      2) With a Corvette, if the fuel pump diaphragm fails while the car is parked, the fuel will siphon out of the tank and onto the "surface beneath the car". If the car is parked in a garage when this happens, you will have most of the contents of the fuel tank on the floor of the garage;

      3) When the fuel pump fails, it will leave you stranded. Fuel pumps are much more difficult to "field replace" than batteries.

        Thanks Mike and Joe, my thought was to replace it . I really trust this mechanic and his son, I don't know why they said it would be o k.
        Now , where is the best places to buy a pump ? Would I have a chance at the local Chevy dealer (Penski, Indy ) Thanks.

          It depends what your engine application is and whether you insist on exact correctness or just a functional replacement.

            On exact correctness, Joe.. do you know a supplier where one can be purchased for future needs?

              Gary -

              Paragon has a functional replacement (without the AC logo or part number stamping) for about $30, or the correct one (with the AC logo and stamped part number) for about $145.
