    C2 1966 327/350 Intake

My 66 327/350 L79 driver had a Holley carb on it with an electric choke when I bought it several years ago. A while back I found a rebuilt correct carb and have been waiting for the excuse to change it. The old carb gave up and when I tried to put the new one on I discovered there was no choke mechanisim on the manifold. (Choke stove?) The manifold has the correct casting number on it according to the TM&JG.

Is this something that can be retrofit or is it that while I have the correct casting manifold, it is the wrong part? I've looked at the shop manuals and I can see where it is supposed to be. There appears to be no provision for it on my manifold.

In the meantime, I put a rebuilt carb of the same type with an electric choke on it and am enjoying the top-down weather.

    What's the story?

    Thanks

Are you sure that you have the correct manifold? That would be GM casting #3890490. This manifold has a choke stove cast into the right (passenger) side of the manifold. The choke thermostat fits into the stove and attaches with a single screw to a tapping in the manifold. Then, a stamped steel cover snaps in place to cover the thermostat. The "coil spring" of the thermostat connects to the carburetor choke valve lever via a specially configured rod.

If you have a manifold with the GM #3890490 casting number and no choke stove, I don't know what it is. The addition of the choke stove was one of the primary differences in the 3890490 casting compared to earlier aluminum manifolds.

Are you sure you don't have a '461 intake?

Thanks guys. I'll check later and get back to the board. The car is in my airplane hangar. I thought I checked all this when I first had the car and I marked my JG as having 389040, but it sounds like I mis-read it.

              Paul

Thanks very much for those pictures. I can see from the manifold pic that mine is different. There is no "cavity" or indented area for the choke stove. I must have read the casting number wrong, or Bubba pulled a fast one. I'll look at the car tomorrow and post what I find.

                Rich,
No problem. Here is another pic of a 1966-67 ...490 intake that is sitting in my basement.

                  Paul and everybody

I just looked at my manifold. It is a 3890490 casting. There is the letter "M" under the casting number. There is a small depression where the choke stove should go, but not nearly as big as the one shown in Paul's picture. Also there are no "ears" where the screw holes should be and no screw holes at all.

So what do I have? A SERVICE part or aftermarket knock-off?

BTW, the casting number appears to be real, and not made of JB Weld.

                  Thanks

Please see my response later in the thread, if you have not already. Any insight?

The only thing I can surmise is that someone ground off the choke stove. If that's not what happened, I have no idea what the situation is here.
