How does one restore a Q-Jet finish?

Does anyone know how to properly restore the finish on a quadrajet?

I was told that it can't be done but the diverter valve that I got from Bill Hodel(which I might say is a first class fellow) looks excellent so I know that it can be done. I've contacted a few carb restoration places and obviously they won't tell me. I then asked if they would just refinish the color of the housings and they said that they will only do a complete resto or nothing...so I guess they are getting nothing.

Does anyone know their little secret?

It can be done with a Casswell kit I think but I have not done the gold. Check the old messages under Casswell.Their will be alearning curve and it could take a while to get the results you want. A friend of mine used a local plater with good results. I send all my headlight cans to a fellow NCRS member and let him do it.
    Good luck

      Hi Greg

Try calling Bob Kunz in Missouri...(314) 843-7545 He is a great rebuilder and restorer..He might do what you want done.As a last resort, EASTWOOD sells a gold color carb paint but that can wear off.

      Good luck...John

The Eastwood paint does not look that good. You can easily tell it has been painted.

I used the Eastwood carb paint on my 57. Although it is not as good as a professional restoration, I have received compliments on it.

Thanks guys but if at all possible I would like to be able to do this myself and not have to ship it out. I like the satisfaction of being able to do as much of my restoration myself as I possibly can...yes I'm a bugger for punishment I know!

A friend of mine used the Eastwood paint on his 72 Buick GS and it looks great but you can tell that it's paint so I know that it won't pass judging and that is of concern to me.

What I really need is to figure out how the carb rebuilders do it. For some reason it took a long time for me to figure out how to phosphate parts but I managed to nail that one with the help of the great people on this forum. I hope that someone will be able to help me with this next quest of mine.

            Thanks,

              Greg ,
Go to the archives and look up plating. Then look for the posts by Gerald Fuccillo.
He even has one in detail about plating his "3810" carb
As I recall he discussed every detail about how he did it as well as a lot of other posts on home plating !

Thanks Jim. Yes I know that post from Jerry that you are refering to. He is actually one of the guys that has helped me with much needed advice in my plating quests. However I believe the Holley carb has a different finish than the Quadrajet and there in lies the problem. I think the Holley has more of a goldish tint with the Q-jet having more of a greenish tint. I can probably use the prep part of his procedure but I think the tinting part will be wrong for a Q-jet.
