Re: John Deere Blitz Black Paint

I have bought JD blitz black by the case on Dales recomendation. It had the best spray pattern of any rattle can I have ever used. I liked the sheen but with in the last two years the gloss has changed so the test Joe did may not be the same paint as Dale used. I have a few cans of NOS JD blitz black the type Dale used but they are not For Sale.

I bought four cans of JDBB about three years ago. Perfect gloss/sheen for underhood. Had some leftover for the next project and sprayed underhood. I had to buy two more cans of current stock. They still had the same nozzle as the old but the gloss or sheen had flattened down.

I had asked the parts man how many different part #'s he had on the JDBB and he said there was only one. Maybe he meant on one in stock but the latest paint was far different than the first.

The old stock Blitz Black was P/N PT 107. It was replaced with P/N TY25311 whose sheen is not the same as PT 107.

            Joe,

I'm not positive, but I thought I had read in some of the earlier posts regarding Blitz Black that there was more than one gloss level available. I've never used the John Deere product and have been happy with Krylon semi-flat; but for my frame I used Mar-Hyde semi-gloss black "Guide Coat" in spray cans, which I think is much closer to what you're looking for. The "Guide Coat" tells me it was intended as a coating to be sanded-off in finding low spots prior to final priming/painting, but I've had the stuff on my (driver) '65 chassis since 1987 and it still looks just fine, so durability is not, in my opinion, a problem. I originally bought this stuff from an auto supply on Vancouver Island in the late eighties and then when I went looking back here in Ontario years later. I couldn't locate a supplier. Called Mar-Hyde (in Cleveland as I recall), and they shipped me a case of twelve spray cans through a local customer suppler. I haven't looked for some years for the product, but it might still be available.

Donald 31176 confirmed to me that the current TY25311 Blitz Black is much flatter than the original PT 107 Blitz Black which has the egg shell sheen, a point of discussion on the other board in January. Actually, there have been two part number changes since the PT107 number was current.

I've located 40 cans of the PT 107. I'm gonna' buy some. I hope it's not dried up from age.
