64' auto Neutral safety / BU switch

Has anyone had any success manufactuing, repairing, or modifying and using an operational equivalent switch for a 64 auto safety neutral switch / backup switch?

Or is donating a kidney for an NOS (if one can be found) my only option....

Furthering your kidney comment, it appears a previous owner performed an emergency bypass operation to the safety switch on my '64. The back-up lights work but the starter operates in any gear. Is there a unique switch for '64 that makes it hard to find?

That is probably the tuffest one to find. To my understanding they were never sold over the counter as a NOS part. john

My 64 auto was missing the same b/u switch when I acquired it 15 years ago. However I scoured Carlisle and did find the proper one. They are very scarce and if not at Carlisle then unlikely not availble as NOS or not yet reproduced. Something like the lower 64 auto shift boot.

Thanks for the responses.

I cracked open the can on the switch and it looks like the internal bakealite portion has disintegrated so the contacts are rattling around inside... I'm going to try and "manufacture" a new internal drum and transfer the contacts over..

I'm also going to see if I cant find a donor BU switch from another year or model and cannibalize the switch...

I have an idea for you. I stumbled upon this when I repaired the BU switch for my '65 last summer.

AutoZone has BU light switches. They are for a passenger car (steering column mount), but they my have the donor parts inside that you need to repair yours. The AutoZone switch is only about $15, so it's a cheap source of parts.

That is exactly what I was looking for!... do you remember what year/make/model of BU switch you used? or are they "generic". I guess I looking for what to ask the parts counter guy...

I think once I get this one working I'm going to talk to my machinist buddy and build one from scracth using the donor switch parts...

Napa # NS6172 works on 66-67. Not sure about 64.

The AutoZOne guy entered the '65 Chevrolet, Corvette directly into their computer and it returned a part number. When he came back with the BU light switch, I could tell that it was not for a Corvette because the bracket was a column mount.

I would just ask them to enter '64 Chevrolet, Corvette and see what he comes up with.
