    LT-1 Decals

1970 LT-1, Laguna Gray is finally painted ( sorry, without laquer ) but I was wondering about the decals for the hood. I am guessing the decals get put on over the clear, after it's dried of course.

Also, I have not seen or read anywhere - the exact location of the LT-1 decals. How far back, etc. I have the stencils/stripes kit, it doesn't say, and the TIMJG, page 25 doesn't refer to it either.

Thanks for any helpful info about placement of the LT-1 decals.
Laguna Gray/Saddle is certainly a different combo, and rare I'm sure. I only know of one other 70 LT1 with that combo and it's a Vert. Does anyone have any knowledge of the numbers of this color combo ?

    Thanks again.

    Re: LT-1 Decals

Doesn't the LT-1 section in the AIM have some information about the location? It seems to me it does, but I don't have in here at the church--it's at home.

Rev Mike has a steel trap mind!

Placement dimensions for the LT1 hood decals are listed at the back of the AIM, in the LT1 option section, UPC LT1, Sheet B1. And, as for installing 'over' the clear...since the factory did NOT clear coat the exterior finish, technically the answer is 'no' -- the decals didn't install over the clear since there was no clear!

Jeeeez, thanks fellas. I'm not a regular here, but have asked simple questions before, and received nothing but respect and amazing knowledge from the experts. Answers that assisted me in restoring a very nice, rare LT-1 Corvette. Never got any answers like the above before. I'm almost 50 yrs old, I've been around. Sorry, I don't have the AIM, and so what I didn't use Laquer.
I guess it was too much for you to just advise, suggest to me where the decals go as it's listed in the AIM. I know the cars didn't have Clear. That's not news to me, sorry.

I'll make sure I don't waste anybody else's time here by asking a restoration question. Unbelievable..........

Mark, Please, may I suggest you rethink...

...your response. You have just received great input to your questions from two of the most astute members of NCRS. I suggest you not reject it so quickly. It may not come around again...

            Mark,

I thought he answered your question with the clear comment being humor. It is difficult to precisely describe where something like the decal is placed without a drawing. He told you where the drawing could be obtained. Did you expect someone to recreate it and post it?

Re: Rev Mike has a steel trap mind!

I am not sure what you were looking for but you got the most straight forward answer possible. Without the AIM you don't have the drawing showing the placement; without the drawing you can't duplicate the LT1 decal positioning.

Mike's answer came off the top of his head and Jack's answer even included the page number. What else do you want?

                Mark,
If there is something that I replied with that was offensive, please let me know. I was under the impression that I was trying to be helpful. I agree that yours is not a common car/color--a friend just sold a Laguna Gray/blue interior 70 LT-1. Attractive car. Suggest that you do purchase the AIM if you are doing anything to the car. $20 investment that can save you much money in avoiding mistakes.

This might be a simple case

of someone who has a chip on their shoulder regarding the NCRS and can't wait to find proof that we're all just grumpy old men as is frequently reported on some other internet sites.

Short of running to the guy's house to install the decals for him, plus changing the rules regarding paint appearance during judging, there was probably little chance of getting a simple 'thank you' to those who volunteered advice.

WAS my attempt at tongue in cheek humor. Sorry, you interpreted it as a 'knock' -- it wasn't intended to depricate!

Mike, I might add to your response:

First, you attempt to help someone solve a problem, no matter how big or small.

Second, if the requestor won't help himself or throws the advice back in your face, then he isolates himself from further help.

Third, the help or advice is offered for free. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

                              Principles above Personalities

                              Mark,

You haven't wasted anyone's time, but received the best Corvette advice of any Forum available--Period! It's free too! You have the best bunch of people sharing their experiences and hard work from all over the world. Don't be so quick to get discouraged, remember, "take what you like and leave the rest!"

Now, for the LT-1 stripe, I know nothing about C3's but I do know about painting cars from my Buddy's autobody shop and the work I have done there. I don't know if the stripe is painted or a sticker.

If it is painted, like the 67BB hood I helped paint last month(Glasurit), then paint stencil on top of color BEFORE clear. Wetsand ending with 1200,1500 or higher if you like and colorsand with a good quality rubbing compound(3M).

If it is a sticker like my 68 GT Rustang, then it goes on AFTER the colorsanding of the clearcoat with no protection on top. Here's a shot of me fixing some of Bubba's work filling the vinyl top holes with num num. The stripe can be seen just below the primer as it sits on top of the clear.
