Re: C2 Should I have pad restamped?

What I meant with the "and was probably a nice car." comment was that it was a nice car in condition and usually not trashed or ready to roll over and die. If someone had been so easy on it that the original engine was still in it, then they probably took care of the rest of the car, too.

However, as in everything, there are exceptions. Some cars with original engines were maybe three cans of STP away from blowing up, no doubt.

Likewise, there were many nice cars that the original engine disappeared due to no fault of the owners - theft, parts breaking, etc. A friend lost his in a '76 at 1100 miles. The oil pressure sender wire fell off twice and he took it in to the nearest dealer, whom he didn't buy the car from. On a Friday he called to tell them the oil pressure dropped to zero again and they said bring it in on Monday and they would fix the wire again. Instead, it really was zero oil pressure and he flatbedded it in after a rod exited it. Oil pump failure at 1100 miles.

And there were a lot of very nice cars that the engines were replaced on purpose to have more power or whatever.

-------My 69 435/427, bought new in Cleveland OH. went back to another dealer back at school (Ohio U) 4 days later. Had a frozen piston pin, which forced the piston sideways in the hole. Dealer asked me if I wanted the engine repaired (a fairly easy proposition) or a new short-block both choices under warrantee. Of course, I opted for the short-block. I didnt want a "repaired" engine in my brand new Vette!!! Original numbers??? I didnt know the engine had any numbers on it. I was just waiting to get the car back so I could slide the L88 hood, headers, custom 68 big exhaust, and the 8"+10" Ansen slots and Firestone racing tires on it. And that was just the beginning..........Bill S

"Pad still has some of the original broach marks on it. I had a "corvette expert" look at it with his special glasses and flashlight. I want to thank you guys for your imput."

It was likely that the decking was just minimal to "clean up" the head surface. Perhaps the machinist minimized the stone's travel out onto the pad and so probably only removed the high points around the stamp where the metal raises up around the stamped depression, that would explain the broach marks remaining. Lucky for you too.
