My 1966 Corvette fuel gauge is either on 1/2 tank or almost full. It seems to move between these two points. Neither of these settings is the correct amount of fuel in the tank. Is there a way to test the gauge and the sending unit to see if either is bad?

Re: Fuel Gauge or Sending unit.
You can take sending unit out of the tank and check the resistance using a multi-meter. It should be vary between 0 and full resistance with with a smooth curve, if not it is broken.

Re: Fuel Gauge or Sending unit.
There's a nice schematic as well as troubleshooting proceedures by symptoms for the unique Whetstone bridge topology of the '63-67 fuel guage circuit in the '63 Shop Manual. I can't remember whether or not this text is repeated in the Chassis Service Manual that came on board for '66 and later cars...- Top

Re: Fuel Gauge or Sending unit.
In the February 2006 issue of Corvette Enthusiast there is an excellent article on this topic authored by John Hinckley. The article includes a schematic of the circuit and a recommended trouble shooting guide. I can mail you a photocopy of the article if you would like.- Top
