Hello. I am currently putting a '64 vette 327/365 engine compartment back to original parts. I am replacing parts and putting them on a 350 engine block. I plan to switch out the block last. I have the correct intake, carb, air cleaner, exhaust manifold, and 202 heads. However, when I switched the old heads that came on the 350 block to the new 202 heads, the intake cuts through the rubber gasket on the very back of the block where the intake and block come together and produces an oil leak at that spot. The gasket appears cut. I can only assume the intake is cutting into the gasket when I tightened the bolts down. This has happened twice already. I have thought of shaving down the back of the intake around 25 or 30 thousands but hate to ruin it for the future. A friend suggested eliminating the rubber gasket and just using a silicone type gasket. Has anyone had this problem before and/or does anyone have any recommendations on how to eliminate this oil leak problem.

Re: Intake manifold leak on 1964 Vette
I have found that the rubber gaskets for the front and rear of the intake manifold tend to leak. I think you are better off with the silicone.
The biggest difference between the 327 original engine and the 350 you are going to install is the manner they ventilate. The 327 had an opening at the rear of the block and an opening at the oil fill tube in the front of the manifold. The 350 does not have the hole at the rear. You will have to use venting valve covers to properly vent the engine.- Top

Re: Intake manifold leak on 1964 Vette
Bob, thanks for the response. You are probably correct in the silicone gasket. As for the block replacement, I am eventually going to put an 870 block back in it when I find a good one at a reasonable price. At this time, I have run the tube for the rear hole of the 327 from the air cleaner(with an extension tubing) down to the top of the oil pan where I drilled a hole and attached(bolted)it with a welded nut from the inside for strength. I'm not real sure how much this keeps the positive crankcase ventilation going if at all. It still blows the correct oil cap off when I shower down on the gas pedal. I have put a different oil cap on it(one with a breather hole)and that seems to help but probably needs to be done differently.
