    Happy days are here again......

yes sir, happy days are here. One of the weakest items on the 68 and one of the most EXPENSIVE items to replace is the center gague bezel. This thing always cracks. The repos are $300.00 and are not correct, they may look correct, but a sharp eye will spot it, and the ones that are not busted, ya need deep pockets to get them. I pulled one off, I repaired mine, sent it off to the platers, got it back today, and you have to look long, hard, and close to see the repair. Yes sir, one happy fella.

Re: Ok, I need to know......

.......since I found my bezel busted, and replaced it a year ago. How do you tell the difference? I want to check and see if I was sold an "incorrect" 68 repro. Also, where did you get your original fixed? TBarr #24014

        Re: 68-72 center gauge bezel

Tom , the left upper area of the bezel find the "PUSH" below/ light above seatbelt warning. there is a little bar separating the upper and lower part. That bar is PART OF the bezel itself if it's original. Replacement bezels don't have the bar at all, but the warning light/pushbutton switch has a look-alike bar built into the switch.Otherwise if you removed the switch altogether there would be a large open window with no separation. This only applies to the seatbelt warning light, not thr ajar lights etc. on the other side. The 68 bezel finish is smooth black. 69-up are textured finish. Most of the clusters break because they were designed to break-away on impact to absorb the shock. Bob

Hate to say it, but yes.....

with the server problems facing us, and from what I gather from the troops, not to many are pleased with our trivia and consider that to be drivel, and should not be part of the discussion board. I do enjoy those tivia questions, now I gotta check myself into the Betty Ford Clinic for withdrawal.

Hey, we could be a bunch of Rednecks and the hell with the rest,eh?

              And there's more.....

The repo's don't have the texture, it is ground smooth as the original 68, but the PUSH button is WRONG. The letters are bigger on the repo, and the face of the push button has a very fine texture, the 68 is silky smooth. The repo is made out of pot metal and the 68 is made out of plastic.

And now, you know the rest of the story.

                Re: And there's more.....

One more thing, the springs provided in the new repro center instrument clusters for the seat belt button are weaker than the original springs. You can feel the difference between reproduction and original spring by the resistance when pushing the button.

We could ask them if they would like some cheese with that "whine"... I enjoyed the trivia too, but guess if the server size is a problem... If it was not a problem, I would ask the trivia question "What is the name of the movie with a '56 Chev (could be a '55 or '57) traveling across country, with lots of footage around Tucumcari on Rte 66, drag racing for money, and who is the musician that is one of the two drivers?

I would have to guess James Taulor was one of the drivers but can not tell you the name of the movie.

                      Excellent!

James Taylor was either the driver or the mechanic, can't remember which, and the movie was - nope I won't tell yet - see if anyone gets it... I thought it was interesting because of lots of good footage along 66 through New Mexico.

That center gage cluster has two versions for 68. The early cars do not have a finger reset button on the right side, just a blank pad. So if replacing with a so called better condition part be sure you get the right one.

                          My final answer

Taylor was the driver. I think the movie was Two Lane Black Top. Warren Oates was in it driving a Challenger or Charger.

                            Re: 68-72 center gauge bezel

Thanks Bob. After checking, mine is correct for originality. It has the "bar" or seperator in place and is part of the bezel itself. I was already aware of the smooth surface / finish of the bezel for 68, which I have with mine. As far as the push button and the rest that was mentioned, I already had those originals and just used them with the newer bezel. TBarr #24014

Correct, Two Lane Blacktop. (I thought Warren was driving a Ram Air IV GTO)
