    non-corvette tech question

on a splined driveshaft(PTO driveshaft for the hay baler), is there a formula for determining how far the female splined shaft should fit over the male splined shaft? ie, if the od of the male shaft is X, should the slines mesh 2times X, 3 times X, etc.Got new used round baler and the mesh distance seems too short based on other balers we have. thanks, mike

Doc, the manual for the baler should tell you the length of the PTO shaft. You can change this length by moving the drawbar in or out. If you baler is a JD let me know and I can get the info ASAP for you

Mike, I wouldn't be comfortable with anything less than 2X the diameter of the male shaft. In most cases, that about a 2 inch penetration.

That's about all you're used to anyway I'm sure...

dickie: the baler is a JD, a 435 round baler. the tractor is a 6420 JD. a previous owner of the baler Bubbaized the driveshaft.with the current drawbar position, the male penetrates the female about 4". the OD of the male is about 2 1/2". . problem is the male/female penetration is a max of about 10" before hooking the shaft to the PTO. i believe the max. penetration should exceed the current 10" but doesn't because Bubba has bent one of both of the shafts. Damn, this is one confusing paragraph. i hope you can follow my ramblings. mike

Doc, I have a manual on a 435. That is what I had and purchased an extra manual. I will post the info and send you the manual
