    J56 brake brackets

I have a set of J56/Z07 brake brackets for sale on Ebay. I have received an email from a gentleman who frequents this board telling me that the brackets are repo and not GM. The numbers on the brackets are as follows:

    394880 and 3948879

Both numbers are depressed rather than raised like on the early brackets. I know that these brackets are not the early brackets. I removed these brackets 2 years ago from a 66 BB frame that I took to sell and sold at Carlisle in 2004. I know these brackets were not correct for that frame, therefore that is why I removed them prior to sale. I originally purchased the frame 1990 and these brackets were on the frame at the time of my purchase.

In the interest of being correct to any potential purchasers, my question is:

Are these brackets with these numbers repo as stated by the person who contacted me, original GM, GM service parts or GM re-issue service parts?

Thanks and I look forward to your responses.

    Mike-----

The part numbers which you mentioned are the 69-75 J-56 front caliper support part numbers. However, I do not recall whether the part numbers were embossed or raised on these brackets. The 66-67 bracket part numbers were definitely raised. But, I just don't recall the situation for the 69-74 brackets. I have 2 NOS sets of these, one on my car and the other in the collection. However, I just don't feel like digging them out to check for this feature.

However, I can tell you one thing: the configuration of the part numbers on the originals, GM SERVICE parts AND the later reproductions was the same. So, whether it was raised or embossed, I believe it was the same for all.

I once compared the reproductions to original brackets. I could see absolutely no difference between them other than the normal variations that occur with castings and a slight difference in the color of the cast iron. The originals were cast of nodular iron and, I believe, the reproductions were cast of a higher strength, malleable iron. The reproductions have not been made in years.

Ask him how he can tell

You may be surprised. It may be that 1)he is hoping to get the parts cheaper 2) he knows some difference that is not obvious 3) he isn't aware the later style are different than the earlier ones ( I agree with you that the casting numbers are raised on one style and indented on the other ).

          Re: J56 brake brackets

Can someone post a original part/ casting for a 69-75 that is correct to clarify this?

            Bill-----

The part numbers are contained in Mike's original post. As I confirmed, those are the part numbers for the 69-75 J-56 caliper supports.
