    68/69 wiper door question.

Hi, I was wondering if the 68 people and early 69 people could let me know if they have a screw located on each end of their wiper door used to hold the stainless trim piece down.

The reason I ask is this. I want to find out approximately where in the 68 production they started to use the screw to assist in holding the trim piece down. I would also like to know if this was a screw or a push-in rivet? Assembly manual says screw but the one or two I recall seeing reminded me of a push in rivet.

Any information or observations on this would be appreciated.

    Thanks, Terry

Terry, the screw, rivet, was a drive rivet. It has a dome head and a twisted or screw shank.

Dick would you know if this screw/rivet is available at any of the usual sources? My June 68 was missing the moulding when I got the car. I have since replaced the moulding but never installed the screws although the holes are present in the ends of the door.

Thanks, I thought it was something like that. I have a friend that is restoring a June 68 corvette. Trying to gather information about when the rivet showed up. The tech bulletin 68-T-45 dated April 24 describes a clip that was added to the ends of trim piece to help prevent rattles. Those clips are different than the 4 main larger clips that attached the stainless trim. The assembly manual that I have does not show the clip but does shows the press in rivet. In the changes it says the rivet was added 2/9/68. I find that interesting because my May built car does not have the rivet and I am confident it is the original wiper door. So, it must mean that there is or can be a considerable lag to when something was added to the assembly manual and when it actually hit the assembly line. I have contacted several 68 owners and I am hoping to narrow down the time frame in which the rivet showed up. If anyone needs a picture of where to look for the rivet, just email me. Terry

You have it right -- but sometimes it can work the other way -- the changes are made to the cars before the drawings hit the AIM. The only way to know for sure, especially for a 1968, is to survey other cars. Just like you are doing.

                  Terry,
I took the rivit out of the door that I sent you the picture of. The head is on bad condition but I estimate it was 7/32 dia. The body of the rivit is about .110 with a high spiral and is .250 long.
