1963 Engine Oil Smoke - FOUND IT!!!

First, thanks to all of you for the excellent advice through my multiple posts on my 1963 which was/is creating oil smoke out of the right hand cylinder bank after a rebuild.

This problem was driving me nuts but today I believe that I finally found it!

The last go around, I bought a second intake manifold on eBay and installed it on the car thinking that the original was warped to some extent and therefore not sealing properly. Still some smoke out of the right cylinder bank! I picked up a vacuum gauge a couple of days ago and find that manifold vacuum is only 10 "HG or about half what it should be. I adjust the ignition timing and manage to get 13"HG at best and at that level the car is now smoking like a chimney!!

This afternoon I pulled the intake manifold thinking that I have another seating problem. I check out the gaskets and they look like they were well seated! Intersting! I pull out my trusty flashlight and begin to check the intake ports. Low and behold the intake runner on the third cylinder has a stream of oil running not from the mating surface but rather from lower corner of the runner about one half inch in from the mating surface. A Crack!!! a blasted crack! I can see a stream of oil running from this crack right down to the valve which is wet with oil!! &%$#*&!@%%$% These heads have been in the machine shop twice and nobody picked it up...

I will pull the head tomorrow and get it back to the shop again to see if it can be repaired. If anyone has a slightly used 461 head which they might want to part with, give me a jingle.

    Thanks Again!!

    Joel

      Muggy Weld

They sell a cast iron repair rod which is machinable and requires NO pre-heating, and is done with the stick welder! They even have a video clip that shows the rod in action on an engine block and an exhaust manifold. You may want to try it (about $60 for 1/2 pound of rods) it's a lot cheaper than a new head and to rebuild that head.

      Hope this helps,
      Mark
