    PO2 Emblem paint question

What is it about the red paint in the emblems for Corvettes? My 72 has PO2s and almost all of the red paint on the center caps is gone or nearly gone. When I replaced the front emblem on the hood, its red paint was 90% gone. Same thing on my since-sold 66 - virtually no red paint on the front or rear emblems. Is this typical? Is this an oxidation thing or is red paint more susceptible to UV fading?

I have a great set of PO2s, on an unrestored 37000 mile car and the missing red is so readily apparent. I can't imagine me drilling out the center caps just to replace the red paint on the emblem.

Just repaint them. I use Testors and a tooth pick and dab and fill the squares.

Gary --- See photo below. This is one of my unrestored '69 wheel cover center caps. They were taken off the car very early in its life and placed in storage, the collection of dirt has never been washed off. I did wipe off the emblem to take this photo. Looks like the red is kind of irridescent.

        Addendum

Some vendors sell PO2 wheel cover replacement center emblems. Can't attest to their quality or fit. Perhaps the protective silver coating over the painted emblem is wearing and permitting road dust to erode the other paint colors. On hood and rewar emblems, all the colors tend to wear, expecially if the car is driven. Reason for the wear is, in my estimation, friction caused by air/dust particles. Repain 'em or replace 'em. Make you choice.
