I am looking for an original rear sway bar to fit my 66 roadster. Can anyone recommend a good source? I understand you can no longer obtain through GM. Has anyone had any experience with aftermarket kits? Thanks

Re: Rear Sway Bar

The 65-67 rear sway bar was unique to those years. It was GM #3872451 and has been GM-discontinued for over 15 years.
For a used original, you might try Ikerd's Corvette(www.corvettepart.com); Pacific Corvette in Puyallup, WA; Paragon Vintage in Swartz Creek, MI 800-480-7556; Bair's Corvette in Linesville, PA, Tracy Performance (www.tracyperf.com); Long Island Corvette in Copahague, NY; or Cranes Corvette in San Diego, CA (www.cranescorvette.com). One or more should be able to help you out, but it will probably not come cheap. Make sure that you get the 65-67 bar. All 65-74 rear bars are 9/16" and of similar, but not identical, configuration. There were 3 different bars used during this period: 65-67, 68-only, and 69-74. 75+ Corvettes with HD suspension also use a rear sway bar but it is of 7/16" diameter and can be readily discerned. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 68 Rear Sway Bar: Curious
Joe,
You have my curiousity now. I remember you asking some time ago for rear sway bar input from known original 68's. What were the differences for the 68 sway bar compared to previous and later years? Thanks. TBarr #24014- Top

Re: 68 Rear Sway Bar: Curious
Tom-----
I wish that I knew! I had been lead to believe that, possibly, the 68 bar was 7/16" diameter, like the 75-up rear bar. But, your information disproved that theory. I afraid the only way to tell for sure would be to set each of the 3 bars used during 65-74 side by side and compare them. The problem is, since the bars are all of similar configuration and diameter, combined with the fact that the part number nowhere appears on a bar (except NOS with a label), it would be difficult to to know, for sure, what one was comparing.
Now, of course, if we could find cars of each year range (65-67, 68, 69-74)known to have original rear sway bars and could get their owners to take the bars off for comparison, we could settle this question. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Should we start a 68 Wish List?
Joe,
I guess it would be a little obvious (since you wouldn't have had to ask for the input in the first place) but you don't have a known-to-be original 68 rear sway bar in your collection? Also, I don't want to assume ALL the credit for dis-proving a theory, but I will re-affirm my 68 rear sway bar to be a "definite-maybe" original. Maybe we can get some more attention with this and have a few known original 68 sway bar owners to provide more input or diameters. TBarr #24014- Top
