C3: Wobbling speedo and tach guages

Hi all,

Here another C3 (69) related question. Recently my speedo was starting to act like crazy with the meter going all the way round, especially when I drive more than 50 miles per hour. It is ticking as well. At lower speed it works reasonable. I removed the speedo cable (better for tax reasons as well since the c3 is my company car and if I drive more than 500 km per year with it for private usage I get tax like hell!

Now also my tacho is starting to wobble a bit around the area it should measure. I'm afraid I won't be able to avoid much longer to remove the dash and investigate the problem(s).

Are there any common causes for the described problems above? If so where can I get the needed parts to solve these (if any are needed). I noticed at CC there isn't much for sale in this area (just speedo gears and tach gears). Shipping the guages back to the States doesn't sound appealing due to shipping and tax costs. I think I can manage all the repairs myself if I can get the needed parts to service it...

Remove the gear from the tack and clean and lube all the parts and hope it is not too late. This should be done when buying a vette with tack drive as the cost for all the parts is about two bills and lube is cheap. The cable or the head very seldom are the cause of problems but a little lube on the cable helps. The speedo also has a gear drive that wears out fast if miss aligned and a cable that is hard to lube.
