Is it recommended that I install the french locks on my exhaust manifold bolts? I presently do not have any type of lock washers. Also, I noticed that spacers are recommended fot the outer attaching positions. I will be using gaskets so I am not sure that they are needed.

Re: 57 Exhaust Manifold
Spacers may not be needed; but they were included on the inital installation, along with french locks. This may be a minor deduct, if you are having the vehicle judged; and another minor deduct for the addition of gaskets. Enjoy the vehicle the way you want!- Top

Re: 57 Exhaust Manifold
Mike,
It is HIGHLY recommended that you use no gaskets between the exhaust manifold and cyl head. No gaskets are needed but, more importantly, they can easily cause cracking of the manifolds. The first two years of the small block engine used gaskets but the cracking problem led engineering to eliminate them for the 57 and later models. If the machined surfaces on the manifold and cyl head are decent, there will be no leakage.
The french locks and washers are a good idea for the end locations as the bolts may loosen without these items. The wide range of temp difference between the cyl head and manifold seems to have an effect on the end location bolt torque.- Top

Re: 57 Exhaust Manifold
Spacers weren't there for looks, obviously--my understanding is that they were there so that the exhaust manifold bolts intersected the head the appropriate depth. Why not just the correct length bolt? No idea.- Top

Re: 57 Exhaust Manifold
I think only 4 spacers were used. Can't remember if they were for the inside or outside bolts. All the bolts were the same length. Not using the spacers results in the bolt interferring with the piston. Not good.
Hope this helps.
