The spindels are suppose to be "natural" accoring to the tech manual on the 65. Does that mean they were cast and left on a shelf to rust (bare steel) then put on the car with no protective coating?
65 spindel question?

Front spindles
Jim,
On some mid-years, part of the front spindles were dipped in paint, but what the dipping didn't cover did indeed start to rust, just sitting on the shelf. The lack of rust on some such parts raises the suspicion in the minds of some judges that the parts were painted by the restorer with a satin clear.

Re: 65 spindel question?
Jim,
You are correct that spindles on a 65 would have been natural, both front and rear. The amount of rust, if any, would likely depend on the length of time that the new car sat outside at the dealer prior to delivery and also the time of year that the car was produced. The raw spindles, as finished by the mfg., would have had a light coat of machine oil on them so it's very unlikely that they would have had any rust from storage before being assembled or installed on the chassis at the St. Louis plant.
The trip from the assy plant in St. Louis to a dealer in a far away northern state in January would likely have seen salt spray on the trip so I would expect to see some light rust on these items, especially if the car sat outside in stock at the dealer. However, a July build that went somewhere hot/dry probably would show none.- Top
