    Smallblock weight

Anyone know what the approximate weight of a 327 bare block is? Shipper is asking to determine price. Also, any recommendations in shipping a block cross country? Who to use and what it should cost? Thanks

    Re: Smallblock weight

I had a short block built in AZ and shipped to Newark, NJ. The builder set up the shipping arrangements and he used SEKO U.S. Worldwide Air Freight. It cost approximately $150 which was cheaper than I could arrange through a common carrier such as ABF even after a steep corporate discount. The engine was well packaged and strapped to a mini-pallet. I saved some money by having it delivered to my workplace so as to have a dock-to-dock delivery but I am pretty sure that SEKO can deliver to a home address for additional cost. Do a Google search for the phone number and related info.

Sorry but I don't know the weight of a bare block. But I do know that I would not want it dropped on my foot!

    Best regards,
    Mike

You can use www.freightquote.com for a competitive rate. I prefer to call and talk to a human vs. using their website.

Basically, they shop carrier rates for you using their centralized purchasing power and pass the savings along. There's a BIG difference between over-the-road carriers' 'rack rates' (list) and what they charge preferred customers.

Tips on things that affect the rate:

      (1) Are the pickup and destination points 'commercial' meaning businesses with loading dock factilities (a fork lift qualifies)? The rate goes up dramatically if one or both ends of the route are residential and an 18-wheeler can't get there causing the freight to be sub-contracted to small truck/van...

      (2) Is the load 'stackable' or lashed to an open pallet? Technically, if it's not in a fully enclosed crate, carriers can charge you deck-to-roof equivalent space rates...

      (3) A means to reduce transit cost is to ship "terminal to terminal". That means your seller agrees to drive the load to the carrier's local terminal on his end and you pick it up at the terminal on your end.
