I'm rebuilding my leaf springs on a '55. When I replace the old bushings with the new, does anyone reccomend any type of silicon spray or grease to keep them moving freely or just assemble dry?
I have replaced rubber bushings in similar. If it is rubber on steel, I use silicone grease to get them in. If it is steel encased bushing that is being pushed into a steel surround, I use grease. Just wipe the grease off when done. Grease and oil will eat rubber but you probably know that. Terry
You won't go wrong with silicone. Mild soapy water will work also. It will all get squeezed out. I have removed them after I put them in there couple days later. Never saw any sign that the silicone stayed in there. Actually it looked very dry. You can use silicone spray also. Soapy water is a safe bet. Sort of like spitting hairs. Never use petroleum based stuff on plastic or rubber if you can help it. Use silicone or wipe-lube on plastic. Some rubber can take it (neoprene??). Have fun, Terry
