I have a '65 327/300. Does anyone (Edelbrock?) make a BRAND NEW AFB that would replace the original carb and use the original air cleaner. Looking for a NEW carb with the original air cleaner opening, same fuel inlet location, vacuum advance etc. Probably too much to ask for but I'm tired of rebuilds. Thanks...

Yes, you can get a new AFB carburetor that will SERVICE your application from Edelbrock or from Carter (division of Federal-Mogul). This will not be an exact replacement and may vary in certain respects from the original, particularly with respect to choke configuration. However, it should fit the a/c just fine. Plus, it will be NEW. NOTHING MAKES AN ENGINE RUN LIKE A NEW CARBURETOR. NOTHING. PERIOD.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Replacement Carb for '65 AFB
The modern Edelbrock AFB (I think it's called the "Performer") will have the gas inlet and the vacuum advance in different places. Most importantly, your air cleaner base won't fit. The air horns on modern AFBs and Holleys are 5 1/8" The 62-65 Corvette AFBs were smaller. I was never able to find an adapter. Even if you were to find an adapter, I believe the adapter would raise the air cleaner too much. There's not much room in there.
You can fabricate all these things. Bend up a new fuel line. Run the vacuum advance to a different place. Use the electric choke that'll come on the Edelbrock. Find a carb base that will fit the Edelbrock and your existing air cleaner top. But it's usually easier to rebuild the old carb.- Top

Re: Replacement Carb for '65 AFB
I put an Edlebrock AFB on my '64 and it was an improvement over the junk Bubba had put there (old, incorrect, beat to death Carter) but it clearly ran best when I bought the correct '64 carb and had it rebuilt.- Top

Re: Replacement Carb for '65 AFB
Andy, I just installed an Edelbrock #1405 on my 59 with a 63 340HP 4-BBL intake and the engine runs really sweet. I went to this combo as I could never get the 2-4BBL set-up to run worth a darn. As far as the air filter, I went to O'Reillys Auto Parts for a fuel filter and discovered a Mr. Gasket 2-inch tall air filter that works great in an old K & N air filter housing that I had bought several years ago for my Mustang adventures. The K & N air filter assembly has a drop base that is 14-inches in diameter and clears the ignition shielding, linkage, choke and hood. I believe the air cleaner assembly is still available from Jegs or Summit. The chrome top looks great. Good luck.- Top

Re: Replacement Carb for '65 AFB
Cudos to that. My dads 68 327 has a E-brock performer 1411 with E-brock H-rise performer intake with a BB hood. I can not find an air cleaner base to work w/o hood clearence issues. E-brock sends me the cleaner that says fits that carb in a vette but the lip is too tall and I cant get a 3" cleaner element in there. I chopped the base down, then choke housing is in the way. Than cut a hole for the choke. Grafted some metal in with the wire welder etc... I've done several vettes all C-3s and have had this problem with each. Most were cured with L-88 style hoods. But dad likes the BB hood. I cant put anything but a thin gasket under the carb. I usually like at least a heat sink under there. Than there was the accel cable issues. Still have issues but its on the road for now till I can spend more time and brain cells on these items. I think a 2" K&N element with K&N extreme lid may solve it? Wish bubba would have left it alone for fit sake. Looks pretty. The carb/car runs well and is quite tunable. I'm ordering a Q-jet replacement for the 442 soon. Cuz it'll all bolt in. I like OEM. I like Q-jets. I can tweak a Q-jet to run like hell. If its a custom or a rod than the other after market stuffs ok.- Top

Re: Joe, do you have a part #?. I can't find...
Andy-----
I think that I was mistaken. It appears that all of the Edelbrock carbs have the larger air horn. Carter used to have replacement carbs with the original air horn size, but I believe that Carter has now discontinued all of their aftermarket, replacement AFB carbs. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
