The oil pick up tube fell out of the oil pump and was laying in the bottom of the pan. I put the tube back in and tack welded it, then I could not get the pan reinstalled because the baffles where in the way. The back of the oil screen is about 3.5" from the back of the pan, the baffle is about 4" from the back of the pan. I bought a new pick up tube/screen but it is only about 2" in diameter the old one was about 3.5". Is the smaller one the correct one for a '66 427? '67?

If the pickup is installed with a hammer on the bend of the tube, by the time you're done, it will hit the baffle in the pan. If you didn't hit it, the prior owner may have. Also, the passenger car pickup also seems to hit the baffle. The correct Corvette piece is available through suppliers like Paragon #8615 about $17. When installing the pan, it doesn't just go straight on but moves about 1/2" (forward or back, I can't remember) as it goes against the block.

I don't think that the small screen pick-up tube was ever originally used for your application. That style pick-up was used for some L-88s (although not for ZL-1), but I don't think that it was otherwise used for Corvette big blocks. However, the 65-66 Corvette big block pick-up tube was different than later. I'm not sure how or why it differed; the pans were, essentially, the same and exactly the same as far as configuration affecting oil pump pick-up.In Appreciation of John HinckleyComment
