    Brake Dust Shield Bolts sizes

I have a '68 427/390. Recently, I was changing my front brake dust shields and noticed the bolts were different sizes on the left and right side. These are the bolts that go through the front brake dust shield, through the spindle and then through the steering arm. The information I have is that 65-67 had small (bearing size) spindles and small bolts (7/16"), 68 had small spindles and large bolts (1/2") and 69 and up had large spindles and large bolts. It seems I have a mid year spindle on one side of my car (small spindle, small bolts). Can anyone confirm the above info (spindle info, bolt sizes, etc.). I will want to put it back right and get a '68 specific spindle if necessary. Thanks for any replies.

The information you have is correct. The 65-67 Corvettes used "small" spindles and "small" bolts (7/16-20). 1968 used the same "small" spindle size but with "large" bolts (1/2-20). 1969+ used the "large" spindles with "large" bolts (1/2-20). So, it sounds like someone installed a 1965-1967 spindle on your car. They may also have installed a 65-67 steering arm, too. The 65-67 steering arm has 15/32" holes; the 68+ have 17/32" holes.

Joe, thanks so much. Two points of confirmation is fantastic. I just wanted to be sure before spending the money for a new spindle.
