    Water Pump Hub Distance Help

    Gentlemen,

I just received my water pump back from the rebuilder. Unfortunately I realized after mounting that the hub was not pressed back far enough on the shaft and the pulleys now do not line up. I do have the 1/8" harmonic balancer spacer in place but the water pump pulley is too far forward by about 3/16". This is before I install the reinforcement spacer between the hub and pulley which will further widen the gap. To be fair this was a replacement pump found at a swap meet that had never been on the engine. I did not take the time to test fit it beforehand and just assumed...

I will take a series of empirical measurements so that I can instruct the rebuilder the press the hub back in further. But can someone provide a sanity check on the distance say from the front of the hub to the mounting flange faces or some other fixed point? The pump is a "609" for a 1961.

Also so that I can be extra sure, can someone also provide the height of the water pump pulley? I thought mine to be correct but it now realize there are no numbers stamped on it. I want to check that the offset is right.

    Thanks in advance.

    Mike

Re: Water Pump Hub Distance Help

Mike, I thought I might be able to help but after measuring, I'm not so sure. I just took two rebuilt water pumps off my shelf and measured them. Both are 1956 3704911 castings, both are professionally rebuilt. I set them on a flat metal surface and placed a metal rule across the top of the fan pulley mounting surface. I put another metal rule on a 90 degree welding magnet to keep it vertical and measured the height of each. One measured 5-9/16 inches, the other 5-11/16 inches. I guess before I use either one, I'll check it against the one I'm replacing and adjust as required. Sorry I couldn't give you consistant measurements. Maybe if someone else can confirm one or the other measurement, it will help. Regards, Bernie Myers

My notes show 5-9/16" is correct for '55-'70 SB water pumps.
