I am ready to install my Crane repop big block valve covers. They have a light coat of oil on them. How do you prep them for paint? Do you prime them? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Bill #44207

Clean them with lacquer thinner, then use a good quality primmer, lightly sand.. the apply 1-2 coats.

Bill-----
It depends upon how original you want them to appear. If you want as authentic an original finish as possible, you need to clean them with lacquer thinner or brake solvent and then apply just one, relatively thin coat of paint.
If you prime them first and then apply multiple coats of paint, you'll end up with a "too thick" appearing paint. However, it will look better. So, it depends what you want.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

You are right Joe... it how original you want it to look. A very light coat of primer, then sand it, and then a few coats ...depending on what you like, then I will let them cure for a couple of weeks, then polish them slightly, they look great.
