C2 Alternator Markings St Louis Line Install

With all the different engine/equipment configurations coming down the line - how did the installers know identify and grab the correct alternator for the particular application ?? Surely they did not have to squint for the hard stamped part numbers. Did they have large codes ink stamped or tagged on the units to differentiate the amp ratings and pulley configuration ? If so where were they stamped and what were the codes ? Where these different then inspection stamps ?

Depends on the era. For certain, by the time we get to Shark era, the JG books document a 2-alpha ID code hand ink stamped onto the alternator to save workers the 'hassle' of reading embossed PN's. These stamps were placed by hand (so exact position varies), but generally on the front half of the case, adjacent to the emboss marks and to the left of them.

Thanks Jack - I'm particularly interested in 1966 production - I do not recall mention in the JG so does that mean these 2 digit ink stanps did not appear ? What about inspection marks for 1966 ?

First mention of the ink stamped broadcast code on alternators appears in Shark era in the '68-69 JG book... If you want to know more about this then what's printed in the JG books, I'd go to a parts specialist in the area like John Pirkle.
