    Something funny here

    Don,

I thought a red car should have a black hood strip. Also, the description says a red convertible top, and the picture shows a white one.

But, it is sure a nice looking car, Gus's or not.

Even the name of the astronaut changes in the ad. He is identified as Virgil T "GUS" Grissom and then later as Virgil I "GUS" Grissom. The I is correct (for Ivan).

The owner admits that the original color as delivered to Gus Grissom was Lyndale blue and was changed to red. Why does the original invoice from the dealership say Rally Red with Red interior?

Good catch John. I didn't even notice that. Another piece of original paperwork is now invalid which makes the rest of the fable suspect, as far as I'm concerned. Typical "private auction".

And yes, the hood stripe is supposed to be black, not white.

The "original" window sticker pictured is a poor excuse for a reproduction. Many of the codes are wrong as well as the type itself. The VIN # was a "stamp" not typed.

              Re: Gus Grissom

There is a web site that has a lot of info on this car.

I ran into this site a few years ago. In one article, it tells that Gus Grissom had the fenders flared and mags added. I think one said he had it repainted. Anyway, once repainted, the color of the stripe is meaningless. I'd have painted it white, too, to match a white top.

And the trim tag is the worst fake tag ever made - it has the unique distinction of having EVERY piece of data on it totally wrong.

How did this car ever get a Top Flight

with a phoney trim tag? I thought that was fraud by the NCRS rules, not just points off.

Probably got the Top Flight before the current judging rules on VIN/Trim tag inspection were in effect...
