Learn something new every day. When and how long was the 70 vin number located by the oil filter on the block? Was the engine code still located on the front pad?

Re: 70 vin location
There are 'random sightings' of the factory using the 'alternate' postion for stamping a particular engine and you've discovered where it is (adjacent to the oil filter). According to the current edition of the '70-72 JG:
"In the first three to five days of 1970 production an alternate location was used for the serial number derivative. Look for this number above the oil filter, on the side of the case, just in front of the bell housing..."- Top

Re: 70 vin location
I can't tell you why the 'alternate' stamp location was used, Dennis. But, there are known 'pockets' over the years where the factory did this. Perhaps they were playing with assy methodization and it was more convenient to wack the tranny (a low side hit) and the engine at a single point in time when the engine + tranny were 'elevated' on a conveyor making the upper vertical surface of the stamp pad less attractive...- Top
