    1962 Carpets

I'm starting to put carpets in a 62 Corvette. I called Al Knoch for a set of instructions, but they said they do not have any. Where can I find step-by-step instructions for installing carpets in a 1962 Corvette?
    Thanks, Wayne Loron

Search the archives here and other bulletin boards, but I don't think you'll find any instructions. There's no secret to installing them. It's obvious where the pieces go. As with anything else, dry fit them first. Couple of points.

    1. Decide whether you'll put any sound/heat barrier underneath. Search the archives for the pros and cons on that. If you do, use thin stuff. You can go from the expensive Dynamat to cheap stuff bought at Lowes/Home Depot. I'm going with the cheap stuff. Why spend a lot to insulate a car that's almost always used with the top down? Use the new carpet pieces as a templates to cut the insulation. Dry fit everything.

    2. Use the 3M glue in a spray can. Follow the instructions on the can. But be careful with overspray. Mask well. This stuff eats paint.

    3. The AIM will show you 2 screws per side through the floorboard. But my '62 only had 1 per side. You can best find them from underneath the car. Put the carpet in and then get under the car. Locate the holes and stick a pin through to the other side. Then you can put the trim screw in where the pin is. Saves additional holes in the fiberglass.

    4. How's the shifter boot? Console trim? Trim screws? Kick panels?

    5. Getting the seats out is sometimes tricky. There are 1-2 bolts per track (I forget which. But you'll see them.), 2 tracks per seat. The bolts are in the front. When you get those bolts out, the seat is supposed to slide forward. The fastening in the rear is just a loop bolted to the floor that the track goes into. However sometimes the track gets jammed in that back loop pretty good. I sit on the seat and lurch forward - the human slide hammer.

    6. I forget whether the front mount just sits on top of the carpet. Or, whether you cut a flap in the carpet so that the mount goes through to the floor and the flap covers the mount. Search the archives, or wait for somebody to respond.

    7. Get the right bolts for the front mount. They're black. Now they'll be noticeable.
