I bid on Jay's 1955 Corvette (red, restored) and didn't win. It sold for $130,000 I beleive. I also bid on a hard top about a month or so ago. I didn't win that auction, either.
In both cases, I got an email from someone saying the original buyer backed out and, as the seller, they would accept my high bid of (whatever my highest bid was). They asked me to contact them via email about sending a deposit.
Since I've dealt with Jay before, I forwarded the email to him just to let him know what was going on. I also contacted the seller of the hard top and sent him a copy of the email I got on his item. Both emailed me back confirming it was a scam.
Someone is watching big ticket Corvette items on eBay (probably other stuff too, like Rolex watches) and contacting bidders who were outbid in an effort to create a little side income.
Buyer beware.
