There has been some discussion of GM service parts and their quality over the last couple of days on the board. Over the years I have been amazed by how many of these culls from the line that I have recieved from GM parts. They would probably never admit officially that they do this, but some of us and some dealer parts men know it happens. My concern is that they want us to be loyal and use genuine parts, yet they will allow inferior parts to get out in this manner. I once argued with an insurance adjuster to use a genuine GM surround panel at a much greater cost, getting the customer involved to put extra pressure on him to do so. And then got a piece of crap so porus that it sopped up every bit of paint I put on it for years. My customer wasn`t happy and neither was I. GM made no effort to rectify this situation. I have recieved parts with "send to service" written on them sometimes repaired sometimes disguised. GM if your listening. If you want us to use genuine parts, and you want loyalty then stop this practice now. If you wouldn`t use it why do you think I would want to?

Re: Service Parts and Culls
My Chevy parts man has also received parts that were previously returned, but my assumption is that the wrong part was sent-returned or the customer didn't like the price/appearance/updated-service-part. All are valid reasons to return parts, and all are reasons to resend them to the next customer who orders them.
By and large, I am thrilled with the availability and quality of GM parts for our ancient vehicles. Exceptions are usually handled by my local Chevy parts department. - Dave- Top

Re: Service Parts and Culls
Yes there are legitimate reasons to return parts to service, but thats not what I am saying. There is no legitimate reason to send me a part that should be new and first quality when it has been culled from the assembly line because it wasn`t good enough for them. There is no excuse for the quality of some of the parts that have been sold over the counter. That is except for corporate greed. And then they sue someone who attempts to make a part that they do not even supply any longer.- Top
