im needing to change what i believe to be causing my leak where the speedo cable goes into the trans on the driver side underneath, my question is, after loosening the bolt that has a clip like thing then the speedo cable connection, should the gears just slip out or do i give it a good hard pull??? thats where im at cause it dont want to come out to get to the bad o ring,, this is on a 78',, thanks for your help,, doug

Once the 1/4" bolt is loosened and the retainer is rotated and clear of the fitting, it will require a considerable pull to remove the fitting. That's because the o-ring will "stick". The best way to get "something to pull on" might be to leave the cable attached to the fitting while you're doing this.
Once the fitting is removed, the gear should come out with it. However, be very careful that you don't cause the gear to drop into the transmission. This can happen if the fitting comes out leaving the gear behind and you are not extremely careful about removing it by itself.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
