    C2 Coil Capicator

My 67 coil capicator wire broke off just below the reddish cover. It appears to be the original capicator with D-R logo on it (Delco-Remy?). Is this repairable or should I just buy a repo from one of the various vendors?
    Thanks,
    Rick

Rick, I can't tell you if it's worth your time and trouble (a replacement will normally set you back $30 on eBay; less if you find one at a swap meet attached to an old coil bracket), but you can read an article I wrote for our local chapter's newsletter on refurbishing one (if you have Acrobat Reader) starting on page 4. See link below.

Great article! Thanks for taking the time to write it. I need to do this too.

        1. What was the part number of the new capacitor you used? From Radio Shack?

        2. Where'd you get the orange neoprene gasket material? Part number?

        3. How do you measure mfd (microfarads?)? Your article has a picture with a multi-meter measuring the new capacitor. My super-duper-does-everything multi-meter doesn't have mfg as a selection. So, obviously I'm missing something.

Chris, The capacitor I bought at a local electronics supply, I suppose Radio Shack would have something similar. No part number, it was in a bin with a couple hundred others just like it; cost $0.25. Buy as high a voltage as you can that will physically fit, I think the one I used was 200V. I would steer clear of electrolytics and watch the temperature rating if specified because it gets hot under the hood. The gasket material was from a local parts supply, NAPA or Advance Auto, something like that, shop around; ask if you don't see it. The meter is from the afore-mentioned Radio Shack. It's about $60 but it measures everything, including capacitance (even has a temperature probe) and it's auto-ranging. That's important if you're old and forget to do things like change scales when measuring high voltage circuits, which is how I wound up buying it in the first place.
