I was wondering if anyone knew of how the license plate holder was attached to the car on this 1968 L-89. Was this a customized attachment and can this be accomplished on a 1969 easily? Any ideas why this was dropped low? Cooling perhaps?

Re: License frame placement 1968? Custom?
Charles-------
This car looks like it lacks the factory license plate bracket. Also, the plates look to be California dealer plates. These plates are assigned to a dealer and not to a specific car, as ar most other California license plates. Dealers temporarily attach these plates to cars used for demonstrators, test drives, etc. Often, a very "portable" sort of attachment is used so that the plates can be easily transferred from car-to-car. That's what this installation looks like.
While this looks like a very old picture, the same system has been used in California for at least 40 years; it's still used today. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: License frame placement 1968? Custom?
------You are looking at Bob Wingates 68 Vette. Probably the most famous Corvette salesman there ever was. Am not sure if Chevy gave him that one as they did in 67 but suspect they did. That placement of the plate IMO was definetly an attempt to get all possible air to the radiator. Bob did numerous gymkanas (sp) and used the car as it was intended to be used, therefore probably built up some heat under that 427 hood. Early 68s were also plagued with overheating problems.........Bill S- Top

Re: I'll tell you what Bill
I don't know if that ride was yellow or white, but the look of white with black striping looks very tempting to me.
I think they just used mounted the top of the plate to the lower edge of the license plate frame for the addtional cooling opening.

Re: I'll tell you what Bill
I was aware of the history but I was mainly trying to go to school on some of the differences that appear on this car. Most of the differences are easy to follow but that license bracket I'd love to know what they did. It could be as you say just mounted via the top frame screws in the lower holes it just seems like it would be loose. I think you can admit there is a visual aura there that says "don't even think about it". Big block hood, fat tires on American Racing mags?, license frame holder, racing stripe and what appears to be a different front spoiler extension and a good bit of it FSO?, wow!
Also I know that early 1968 production cars came without the black spoiler extension but this one seems to have one in place and it is painted which in a subtle way increases the lower valences appearance (as well as help with down force). Great stuff.- Top
