    67 SB Starter '320'

    Dear Members,

After about 4-5 months of drama, some my fault, I finally received my starter back from GoatHill. Not for the faint of heart, choose your sub-contractors wisely.

My question, the solenoid attaches to the "nose piece" with what seems to be two screws that are missing from my cad-plated assembly? The screw holes are towards the back(rear) of the car when installed. Is that correct? The solenoid jiggles around a bit currently. The Tech Guide doesn't mention anything except the bakelite finish and casting and date numbers.

Hopefully the picture can shed some light.

    Thanks Mucho!

Yes, you need two screws, can be pirated from any 60's-70's GM product.

      Justin-----

The solenoid attaches to the starter nose with 2 screws that go through the flange on the solenoid and thread into tappings on the starter nose casting.

The screws are 1/4-20 X 3/4" with a slotted fillister head and zinc plating. As Bill mentioned, it's easy to come up with these screws from another starter. There are more than a few around. They might even be supplied with new solenoids. However, if you can't come up with any used ones or want new ones, no problem. You can go to your frindly GM parts counter and tell them that you want 2 of the original style screws to fasten the solenoid to the starter on a 60's Corvette. They'll laugh at you, of course, and tell you that they're "not available" or "they were discontinued a long time ago". If they do, tell them to order you 2 GM #132255. Then, you'll have exactly what you need.

One caution, though: these screws GM list for $3.80/each. Plus, since you're ordering such a low cost item and since you "showed them up" with your part number "trickery", they'll nail you big time with their "price escalator" program. You'll probably pay $7.20/each for the screws.

So, better do like Bill said and find another starter to donate the screws.

Also, I'm amazed that Goat Hill would return/sell you a starter missing these screws. That's just wierd.

One would think that a well respected vendor would ensure that his product is complete and visually inspected prior to sending.

Why not call the old goat and ask him to drop the two screws in the mail?

I found some "looks just like it" screws at a well stocked hardware store the other day. I bought a handful of them for spares. Maybe $.15-$.20 apiece.

I haven't gone near the several closest Chevrolet dealers in years just because of the situation you described.

Good deal when the dealers used to give Wholesale Compensation price breaks.

That's what I'd do, in fact I'd mention your not to happy with the job and would like an extended warrenty on this unit. Because if they forgot something SO obvious who's know what else they missed.

Without those two screws to hold the solenoid/ bendix arm and bendx clutch in place, so it becomes impossible to TEST the starter after it is "rebuilt" by them.

Cut your losses and aggrevation now and send it to John Pirkle.

              just my$.02

I bought an original, "restored" starter from Goat Hill for my '67 big block. Within 3 days of installation, the nose broke off into the bellhousing, the solenoid had to be replaced as well as the drive unit. Need I say more.....
