All original Corvette springs were shot-peened in the manufacturing process. Although the shot-peening was done for functional and not "cosmetic" reasons, the springs were "cleaned" of any scale, rust, etc. that MAY have been on them. So, the springs were thus imparted a more-or-less "satin finish", "natural steel" appearance. There should have been little, if any, black and certainly no scale. An anti-rust preservative was applied to the springs before shipment
This sort of finish was used on Corvette springs at least through 1974 and probably right to the end of C3 production. I think that painted springs were a later SERVICE-only configuration.
Presumably, one could achieve the original finish by shot-blasting the springs. However, that might functionally affect the springs in a negative way.
