'61 FI Air Filter

I've been window shopping for a fuel injection air cleaner. I thought they were made out of metal but the last two I looked at were fiberglass. I had assumed that the fiberglass units were reproductions, but I'm not certain. I looked through the "Complete Restoration Book" and the Restorer CD -- I didn't find anything that really cleared the subject up. I wonder, could someone out there shed some light on the differences between the real deal air cleaners and the reporoduction units?

I can't tell you much about configuration differences on these FI air cleaners but, as far as I know, ALL original 57-65 FI air cleaners were of steel construction.

Ron,

All 58 to 62 Fuel Injection air cleaners were made of steel. The fiberglass units are reproductions and if you can get one cheap enough will be fine to hold you over till a steel one comes along. Rich #2276

Real ones were steel with a big "X" on them as opposed to a small"x" which started to appear off-and-on in 1962 production between S/N2500 and S/N3500. All 62's after that had the small "x". So you want a large "X" metal original air cleaner. well SO DO I!...in fact I need two!

Reproductions are available from two manufacturers. One stinks and the other is VERY good. So I'll propbably wind up with the good repro for the dollar and you probably will as well.
