Off Subject: THM400 Oil Temp Question...

...On my Carvette, B&M Electric Trans Temp Gauge indicates about 100* after quite a few miles of normal warm up. So, should I be concerned it's too low, or should I be a happy camper and just wear a happy face...??? TIA, Dennis

Sounds good to me! 100deg. is pretty cool for an autobox to run. Normal temps are closer to 180-200F, but...cooler is always better for a trans. Ya sure the gauge is accurate?!

Be happy! The cooler it runs the longer it will last, but it should be the same and more then your engine temp.

        Dennis------

I'd check the gauging system for accuracy. All THM-400 used a transmission oil cooler of one sort or another, but I don't think that very many, if any, would run as low as 100 degrees under normal operating conditions and ambient temps.

By the way, you're not necessarily "off-subject". Quite a few Corvettes originally used THM-400 transmissions which was one of the best transmissions ever installed in a GM car. It was so good that after, essentially, discontinuing it in the 80's, GM brought it back and, even later, updated it to electronic control.

put the temp sender bulb in a coffee can

of boiling water and the gauge should read close to 200/210 degrees. NEVER use your better halves good pots or pans for this test! do not ask how i know this

Clem, Would that be like when I...

...baked a pair of painted exhaust manifolds in my wife's new Thermador oven?

Or when I used my wife's dishwasher

to clean a really nasty, flea market bell housing? I washed it twice and then ran the dishwasher twice with nothing in it to clean the dirt and grease. I don't believe that I have mentioned this yet to her.

btw, I highly recommend dishwashers to clean parts, provided you have spousal approval. Worked like a champ.

Oh, that? For that, I use the regular dish washer. The regular dish washer has been doing the dishes for a few years now and she does a pretty good job.
