    67 Brake lights

All of my brake lights are out yet the tail lights work. Could it be the brake light switch? I doubt it is a bulb since all the bulbs don't work except for the tail light portion. Any comments?

    Thanks

    Jim------

In a rear bulb which functions both for tailights and brake lights, there are 2, seperate filaments that illuminate for each function. So, it's possible to have bulbs for which the brake light filament has failed and still have operating taillights. However, it's sort of unlikely that you would have this problem on more than 1 bulb. So, I'd say that checking the brake light switch would be a good place to start. First, though, you might want to check the fuse. If I recall correctly, the fuse for the brake lights is different than the fuse for the tailights. A failed fuse would then cause all of the brake lights to disfunction while all the taillights would continue to operate.

Joe, thanks for the quick response. Although I don't have the car with me and won't for another week I'm pretty sure the brake lights and tail lights were on the same fuse. I'll re-check next week. If they are on the same fuze I have ordered a brake light switch just in case.

      Thanks

If the brake light switch on your car is original, the new switch will be configured differently. The old one may have a metal case; the new one will be plastic. If so, don't let that fool you into thinking that you have the wrong switch. The 2 designs are functionally equivalent.

Also, I know that on a 1969 Corvette the taillights are on a different fuse than the brake lights. I would think that it would be the same for 1967, but I don't know that, for sure.

Joe you are right in that the new switch will be plastic. The one on the car appeared to be plastic also. Thanks for your input.

You know I didn't really check them. I'll check them next week when I get to the car. If they don't work what will this indicate? Problem with the flasher or some other electrical problem?

                Thanks

Pete, I really don't know. When the cop told me the brake lights were out I only checked the tail lights, fuses etc. I'll check the turn signals next week when I get to the car. If the turn signals don't work what would that indicate?

                  Thanks
