    Length Matters: '65-66 Valve Stems

1965 Tech Info Manual (and maybe 1966 - but I don't have that copy) calls for 1-3/8" long valve stems (I assume this means from the steel rim surface to the tip of the brass(?) threads. The manual adds that the stem "protrudes from a hole in the hubcap (wheelcover ?).

But on several stock dated 15-1/2 JK rims I've accumulated from different sources, all measure 2" long, exactly. And when the wheelcover is installed, the brass threads protrude; the rubber stem is just below the surface of the cover stem hole. If the stem was 5/8" shorter, you'd have to remove the wheelcover to check pressure or add air.

What are the thoughts of others -- 1-3/8" or 2" on stock steel rims ? I can see calling for 1-3/8" on knock-off rims, though

P.S. Note the date and rim code on the lower left of the photo below [65 and 3 (March)], as well as one of the "nubs" on the rim of the '66 wheel (located in the pic of the link below on the rim opposite about half way down the stem)

    The 63-64 TIM/JG (3rd ed pg78) also calls for the 1 3/8 valve stem.
I have the original 64 spare tire (never used). The valve stem on the rim measures 1 5/16 from rim to top of brass (thread area top)

Also have some new valve stems with the DILL 627 caps on them.
They all measure 1 3/8, however they are all replacement stems available in the early 70's.

Have not put wheelcover on to check, but do remember it was a royal paint to add air to tires with stock wheelcovers on. Replaced all rims in late 60's with rally style.

    Hope this helps

      Wayne,

Good question. I never could find any solid info on the 65-66 stem. There's no number in the AIM that I can find and the 66 printing of the parts book just lists a 1 1/4" for ALL applications of tubeless tires.

Several months ago, I purchased a complete set of 66 dated wheels that were very original and two of these still had worn out original tires on them. The original weights were still in place so I have to assume that the valve stems were also original. They measured 2".

        Wayne,
I believe this is another case where the TIM & JG is incorrect. An original '65, steel wheel that is a spare in my '65 has original 2 inch valve stem. Two inch measurement is from surface of wheel to end of brass threads.

        Hope this info helps.

        Regards,
        Gene
