68 Headlamp Bezels

Are the diecast metal headlamp bezels for a 68 the same as the 70, 71 and 72? I realize the 69's are different. If not the same, what makes the 68 different from the later ones?

I have been working on the headlights of my 68, it is my understanding the metal / cast bezels are the same with the exception of the 69s that have the hole for the washer nozzels.

The early 68 H/L openings are smaller and the bezels may have been cut or are more likely to be damaged as they didn't fit well.

Both 1969 & 1970 headlamp bezels have the holes for the washer nozzels that was standard during these two model years. Some 1971 bezels came through on cars with provisions for the nozzels as well (supply inventory, later '71's & 1972 bezels will not have the holes for nozzels and should look correct for 1968 cars, with exception to the early '68's which apparently may have used a slightly smaller version (not sure though).

My experience is this. There are a couple of different headlight door sizes. That is generally accepted. I have owned several doors and bezels and done a lot of comparing them to one another. That said, there are at least 2-3 different sized headlight doors. Now, I have had several 68 headlight bezels and I have only found one that would fit an early headlight door without sticking out around the edges by an 1/8 inch. I measured the one that did fit and it measures dimensionally about an 1/8 inch smaller all the way around compared to my other bezels. They are a real pain in the ass to find. Now....I don't think that just because a car came with small headlight doors it had small headlight openings. The two don't seem to always go together. But, that is just my experience so far. I would truly like to know the dimensions of the headlight door openings and how many of the early cars had the small headlight openings. Also, all 68 headlight doors regardless of size are unique to 68 in the headlight adjustment area. If you would like, I can send you pictures of that area. Have a great summer! Terry

My 68 is a August 5, 1968 build date so it would not have the smaller doors. If you want to know the measurements of my doors let me know. Also if you want to send me some pictures my email address is mfranken@spt.com
