John, you made my week! Vette folks are the Best!

John, Thank you thank you thank you!!!! What can I say, you're just too cool & sweet! (John is going to send me a block of Delron and Torlon for a replacement piston to be machined by Uncle Don.) :) Just when I was kicking & beating myself up for breaking the irreplacable 1970 only plastic parts! I'm my own worst enemy and you saved me from myself! Wow, this is great. The generosity and kindness John (and all of you online) have given me is just amazing. Corvette folks are just the BEST! :-) ~Juliet

        Re: Well that really BITES!

Well, Uncle Jack got inspiration from your photos (good reference) and wrote a great post. Regarding the piston I did the job a few months ago, my piston was broken in the back, so I inserted the rod, twisted it and reinforced the broken parts, but I suspect that you have a different problem. You are in better position than me to go to the yard and find that elusive part. Good job, saludos!

Re: Don't Sweat the Grammar!! Just Tell Me......

John, I send directions via e-mail, because if I tried to type them here, it would again convert it into pictures and not actually show the HTML coding. There probably is a way around that, but off the top of my head I'm not sure how... maybe someone more in the HTML know can clue us all in. In the meantime, if anyone wants info on posting pictures to the NCRS board, just drop me an e-mail and I'll be happy to zap out the info to you. :) ~Juliet

Attaching the 70 washer piston to the piston rod

Roberto, You said that you reinforced your piston in the back. Exactly what on yours was broken and how did you reinforce it and how is it holding up? DO you have any pictures? I can put them online if you don't have a web site. :)

My piston is unfortunately broken in the back (the piston rod side). The rod won't stay in at all since it's chipped out completely in 2 places where the arms used to rest. I'm going to have to figure out a way to deal with the piston rod attachment even when I get the new piston machined. I'm not sure if Uncle Don can machine out a cavern of wider width than the opening... ?? So I might need some alternate attachment ideas. Any info you can share will be greatly appreciated. :-)

            Thanks, Juliet

Re: Attaching the 70 washer piston to the piston r

I have used 4-40 threads into delrin(and i suspect would work into torlon as well) and it works well. use a slightly smaller hole than what is called for, for the tap drill, and then when you thread it, it gives a little. when you put the screw(or threaded rod) into it then; it's a little tight, which is what you want. red threadlok works if you let it dry for a week. holes should be threaded at least 1/4" deep for 4-40. for higher strengh and retention, use threaded metal plates or nuts(use press fit) in recesses.

                Re: Well that really BITES!

Can see from the cascade of thread below, the best of NCRS has emerged!!! Think you'll find this organization has WONDERFUL people who wil bend over backwards to help (educate, inform, contribute to) people with a genuine interest and the backbone to get their hands (or wallets) dirty in the line of Corvette restoration/preservation....

Back to your questions: (1) the nautillus is the 'star' drive gear on the back side of the washer pump that engages with the wiper motor's drive gear, (2) the 'carousel' is the front side component you broke. Think you'll find both are common to earlier/later Corvette and passenger car applications. Both can be removed from a 'donor' pump and transplanted onto your 5-porter. Good luck!

                  Re: Well that really BITES!

The piston as well can be transplanted from the 3-port brothers of the 5-port pumps. However, the 5-port cylinder assemply minus the piston is exclusive to 1970 CORVETTE. This was the piece that I needed as it was broken when I bought my car 9 years ago.
